Mobility Auto Group donates adaptive equipment to the Costa family

At Mobility Auto Group, our mission has always extended beyond vehicles. It is rooted in independence, dignity, and standing alongside families when they need it most. Recently, we had the privilege of joining a remarkable group of organizations and individuals to support a family whose story has deeply impacted everyone involved—the Costa family.
A Life Changed in an Instant
Brett Costa was known as a dedicated youth hockey coach in Wyoming, a devoted husband to Kim, and a proud father of four. In February of 2024, Brett’s life changed forever when he was involved in a serious car accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down.
Despite the unimaginable challenges that followed, Brett remained determined to move forward. His goal: to return to the sport he loves, this time as a sled hockey athlete, and to continue inspiring others through perseverance and resilience.
A Series of Unimaginable Losses
The Costa family’s journey, however, became even more heartbreaking.
In the summer of 2024, they were selected as recipients of support through Dawg Nation, a community-driven organization committed to helping families in need. Brett had hoped to attend the annual DAWG Bowl hockey tournament, where he planned to connect with members of the U.S. National Paralympic team and continue his journey in adaptive sports.
But life had other plans.
Brett’s wife, Kim Costa’s father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and moved into hospice care, preventing the family from attending the event. Then, just one week after that diagnosis, tragedy struck again in a way no family should ever endure.
Their 10-year-old daughter, Sawyer—who had been selling lemonade to help her family during this difficult time—was tragically hit by a car. She passed away one week later.
It is a loss that cannot be measured, and one that has left a lasting impact on all who have heard their story.
Honoring Sawyer’s Legacy
In the face of profound grief, the community rallied around the Costa family.
Additional financial support was provided, and a memorial scholarship was established in Sawyer’s name. This scholarship now lives on as a symbol of her generosity and spirit, helping other young athletes pursue opportunities they might not otherwise have.
Already, it has made a difference—supporting a young player this past season and ensuring that Sawyer’s legacy continues to inspire others.
A Community Comes Together
Today, the focus has shifted toward something equally meaningful: restoring mobility and independence for Brett and his family.
Through an incredible “pass the hat” effort, this has truly become a community-driven project.
- A brand-new van was secured at a significant discount thanks to the generosity of Vista Toyota in Casper, Wyoming, along with the Colorado’s Keep Driving Foundation
- Mobility Auto Group has stepped in to support by installing specialized Adaptive Equipment into the new van.
- The vehicle also features a custom wrap honoring Sawyer’s memory, generously donated by The Wrap Factory in Denver
Each contribution represents more than generosity—it represents belief in this family and a commitment to helping them move forward.
More Than a Vehicle
For most people, a vehicle is a convenience. For the Costa family, this van will be life-changing.
It will mean:
- The ability for Brett to travel safely and comfortably
- Greater independence for daily life
- The opportunity to return to the hockey community he loves
- A tangible reminder that they are not alone
At its core, this effort is about restoring freedom, rebuilding possibility, and honoring a young life that continues to inspire acts of kindness.
An Invitation to Be Part of Something Bigger
This project stands as a powerful example of what can happen when a community comes together with compassion and purpose.
While much has already been accomplished, there is still an opportunity for others to contribute—whether through financial support, services, or simply helping share the story.
At Mobility Auto Group, we are honored to play a role in this journey. Supporting the Costa family is not just about delivering a vehicle—it is about delivering hope.
And in moments like these, hope is everything.
